Jekyll

This show kind of surprised me. As with most British stuff, hollywood likes to keep it a secret until they can figure out a way to copy it, add actors with better teeth and bigger boobs, and sell it to us as their own. I had never heard of it, but as my reservoir of TV shows that I hadn't seen started to wane, I dug deeper and found some shit like this.

It's a story about a dude who is the descendant of the original Dr. Jekyll, so obviously he turns into a monster he can't control. It seems like a gay idea, but it was put together in a pretty interesting way. Hyde is a sex crazed psycho, who is actually really fun to watch. Neither of the characters remember what happens when they are the other, so they leave notes, and make rules, to varying levels of success. It also has that chick (Michelle Ryan, whose fucking british? What the Fuck? Almost all our best shows secretly have Brits in lead roles, faking OUR accent?... a topic I will no doubt return to) from the ill fated Bionic Woman remake (I'll review that later, too).

Jekyll's wife is played by some Kiwi chick who probably the weakest character in the show, a necessary foil nonetheless, there always has to be some kind of relationship that is imperiled by a man turning into a monster for half his life. The inevitable, "Honey, I'm not fucking my super hot assistant...I can't tell you where I go every night...but it's not that, why would you think that, baby?" Ensues. We've all been there.

If I had made this show, I think I would have called it "Hyde." These shows always make the mistake of thinking the "good" half the side we want as the baseline. Yes we all wrestle with the darkside of our nature, yawn. what if the darkside of our nature had to wrestle with us? What about the horny, supernaturally strong and fast dude, with no conscience and a lust for fun? Why is his disdain at becoming a pussy and acting like a dork (though this is sort of addressed in the show which is why I like it) not the thrust of the show?
